C804 is an interesting route, located in the central part of Flinders Island. It follows Summer Camp Road, forming a short unsealed loop off route C803, providing access to the Tobias Furneaux Lookout which itself provides some spectacular views across the island in both directions. It is uncertain whether the short spur road to the Tobias Furneaux Lookout is part of C804, as no signage exists apart from at the western end of the route. Although, if route C731 is used as a precedent, then it is likely that the spur is part of the route.
Until recently, C804 was unmarked, the three brown fingerboards which mark the route at its western end were installed in 2006 as part of a programme to upgrade tourist signage on Flinders Island.
Prior to this, C804 was shown on maps, including those published by the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Water and the Environment (DPIWE), however its existence was denied by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER), who maintain a record of allocated route numbers across the state. Correspondence with Flinders Island Council has indicated that, when the original set of directional signs arrived for installation from Hobart, C804 was not included. However, in Council's mind the route did indeed exist and in 2006 signage was finally erected, denoting the route's existence. Unfortunately, only three signs were erected, all at the route's western end, so, for now, C804 is a one-hit wonder.
