When Metroad 2 was first introduced, in 1993, it was routed through Lane Cove via Longueville and Epping Roads. For long-term planners this was only an interim route until the full development of the Sydney Orbital between the Gore Hill Freeway and Old Windsor Road could be effected. When the Lane Cove Tunnel opened to traffic in March 2007, connecting the Gore Hill Freeway with the Hills (M2) Motorway and bypassing Epping Road, Metroad 2 was relocated onto the new road.

Following the opening of the Lane Cove Tunnel, Epping Road was slated for an upgrade including bus lanes, cycle lanes and footpath widening. To see more about this, including photos of Epping Road before and after the upgrade, see the Epping Road Upgrade page. (Coming Soon!)
