Introduction

When deciding how set up this list of Western Australian highways, I was faced with a somewhat confusing relationship between declared highways and those roads with a ‘Highway’ name. As explained in the Road Classification in Western Australia section, there is no direct relationship between declared highways and roads that have the name ‘Highway’. Many declared highways do not actually have a ‘Highway’ name, and in the south-west of the state there are a handful of roads with the name ‘Highway’ that are not declared highways. Confusing isn’t it?

In the end, it didn’t seem fair to leave any of the abovementioned ‘Highway’s out of this list, so I have included them all, separated into different categories.

‘Declared Highways with Names’ are those highways that are declared Highways under the Main Roads Act 1930 and have a proclaimed name along their entire length, e.g. Great Northern Highway.

‘Declared Highways without names’ are those highways that are declared Highways under the Main Roads Act 1930 but do not have a proclaimed name along their entire length. These highways are thus usually referred to either by their local usage names or on a point-to-point basis, e.g. Karrinyup Road and Morley Drive. The names referred to in the list below are those used by Main Roads WA and may not match the names shown in street-directories.

‘Non-declared Highways’ are those roads which carry the Highway name but are not declared Highways under the Main Roads Act 1930. They are, in most cases, actually declared Main Roads under the Act. Some of these were formerly Highways prior to 1976 that, despite their classification as Main Roads, have retained the Highway name in common usage.

‘Decommissioned Highways’ are those highways that were formerly declared Highways under the Main Roads Act 1930, or declared as Main Roads under the Act but with a proclaimed ‘Highway’ name prior to 1976, that are no longer declared Highways.

‘Future Highways’ are those highways that Main Roads WA has indicated will, in the future, become declared Highways under the Main Roads Act 1930.

The number next to each indicates Main Roads WA’s internal classification number for that Highway. This number is referred to in proclamations.
