C851 is a 13km long spur route, linking the Tasman Highway at St Helens with the small fishing and holiday hamlets of Stieglitz and Akaroa, located on the southern banks of Georges Bay. The far eastern end of the route serves the St Helens Point Conservation Area, a popular camping and tourist spot.
The route is fully sealed along its length and also serves the St Helens Airport. This tiny regional airport is mainly used to transport fresh seafood to mainland Australia, although scenic flights are also available.
