GUNGAHLIN DRIVE
Caswell Drive southbound showing where Gungahlin Dr will be constructed, October 2004.
Gungahlin Dr is one of Canberra's newest roads, the first stage opening in 1998 servicing the new town centre of Gungahlin. This first stage between the Barton Hwy and Gundaroo Dr was built as an artierial road and will later be extended to the Barton Hwy near Hall to create an orbital style road.
In 2003, construction began on a southerly extension of Gungahlin Drive to the Glenloch Iinterchange (Tuggeranong Pkwy/Parkes Way). This extension will traverse and existing road reservation across Lyneham Ridge and behind the AIS, before following Caswell Drive to the its southern terminus at Tuggeranong Parkway. Earthworks on this extension have begun and a grade-separated interchange at the Barton Hwy has been completed.
The extension is forecast to be opened to traffic in 2006 as a super-2 expressway. The road will be converted to dual carriageways when future traffic volumes warrant. Photos of construction can be viewed below.
