PRINCES HIGHWAY
Former Alignment: Cockhwy Range

One of the projects undertaken by the Department of Main Roads during the Depression was construction of a new 13km Princes Highway route through the Cockwhy Range, 19-32km north of Batemans Bay. This was during the progressive sealing of the highway and it was decided that the advantages of constructing a new route far outweighed those of sealing the existing route. The deviation took almost 7 years to construct and was opened to traffic in December 1939. The old highway still retains the "Old Princes Highway" name and is still unsealed to this day.

Looking south through the heavily forested areas through which the highway passes. I can't see this being much different to how it was in the 30's (although at least we have colour :p). Jul 2005.
