NATIONAL ROUTE 23
Canberra Avenue

Canberra Ave westbound through Griffin, October 2004.

Route Overview:

Canberra Ave is one of Canberra's wide tree-lined boulevards that radiates from Capital Hill. NR23 uses Canberra Ave as far east as the Monaro Hwy where is turns south. Canberra Ave continues east into NSW as NR52, although it is not signed until right near the NSW border. NR23 initally turned south down Sturt Ave but in 1989 was re-routed to the newly opened Monaro Hwy extension from Hume to Fyshwick. Canberra Ave existed prior to the 1930's as a bush track and was one of the first roads constructed to its current standard.
